Our journey began during the HNGi9 internship. With a shared purpose, my team and I embarked on an exciting endeavor: to create a revolutionary solution - a fully integrated platform for teams to connect and interact seamlessly. Building on the progress made by the previous batch of HNG interns, we embraced the Human-Centered Design (HCD) framework as our guiding star. This case study unravels the process, insights, and outcomes of our journey to redefine team collaboration.
Followed HCD process. With a basic aim, Good Usability. Good UX
We followed the User Centered Design process to investigate how Zuri Chat can be "A fully integrated way for teams to connect and interact". Letting user research be our guide, we brainstormed and designed multiple solutions. We then tested our ideas via usability tests and developed a high-fidelity interactive prototype based on our findings.
Unleashing Seamless Team Interaction
Our mission revolved around addressing the inherent challenges in team collaboration. While the previous interns made commendable strides, there was a lingering need to amplify the connection and interaction among team members. Communication gaps, scattered information, and disjointed workflows were impeding productivity. Our goal was to create a comprehensive platform that bridged these gaps, fostered real-time communication, and provided a unified space for seamless collaboration.
Zuri Chat can become a compelling solution by addressing the challenges of fragmented communication, information overload, lack of transparency, integration difficulties, remote collaboration, and mobile accessibility, making it an effective tool for enhancing productivity and collaboration in organizations.
Understanding User Needs
At the very foundation of Human-Centered Design (HCD) lies the fundamental principle of empathizing with users. This process kicked off with a thorough and careful examination of the research analysis conducted by our predecessors, and we found their work to be exceptionally reliable. The secondary data we gathered proved to be invaluable; it played a pivotal role in driving our project forward, not only saving us time but also conserving valuable resources along the way.
Here is a glimpse into what their research plan encompassed
Competitive Analysis: similar products already existed
Further into the research, we analyzed direct competitors in the messaging and team collaboration industry (Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft Teams and Webex app).
We learnt that:
We concluded that
We don't need to fix something that isn't broken; we can, however, make it perfect. We aimed to enhance an existing model by incorporating the features that were missing according to users' preferences. This approach allows us to better position ourselves in an already competitive market, addressing users' needs while leveraging the strengths of an established platform.
Crafting the Problem Statement
With empathy as our guide, we distilled our findings into a concise problem statement: "For remote teams seeking seamless collaboration, our solution provides an all-encompassing integrated platform that fosters teamwork, bridges communication gaps, centralizes information, and streamlines workflows."

Brainstormed the possible UX for the new features
Ideation was a collaborative adventure, bringing diverse perspectives to the table. Brainstorming sessions sparked innovative ideas, from intuitive user interfaces to integrated task management features. Rapid prototyping allowed us to visualize these concepts and refine them further.
Visualizing the Solution
Prototyping (Lo-fi, Hi-fi and mid-fi prototypes) breathed life into our ideas. Using wireframes and mockups, we created a tangible representation of the integrated platform. This stage enabled us to refine the user interface, ensuring it was intuitive and aligned with user expectations.was a collaborative adventure, bringing diverse perspectives to the table. Iterative Refinement
User testing emerged as the cornerstone of our process. By involving potential users in the testing phase, we gained invaluable feedback. Iterative refinements based on user insights honed the platform's functionality, ensuring it resonated with user needs.
User Feedback as a Compass
User feedback became our compass for evaluation. Regular surveys and feedback loops allowed us to gauge user satisfaction, uncover any unanticipated issues, and implement necessary adjustments.
